Breathwork Exposed Synopsis

Breathwork Exposed, the book by Dr. David Deppeler.

What Works, What’s Dangerous, and the Right Way to Breathe.

Breathwork Exposed pulls the curtain back on the booming breathwork world, revealing what actually works, what doesn’t, and why most people are breathing against their own biology. Written by physical therapist and breath coach David Deppeler, this book blends modern science, Qi Gong tradition, and decades of clinical work using capnography (real-time CO2 analysis) to uncover what truly changes the body and mind. Whether you’re a high-performer, anxious over-thinker, or curious beginner, you’ll learn the real mechanics, chemistry, and mindset that make every breath count—and how to use them to feel, move, and live better.

The book Breathwork Exposed.

Quotes From Inside

❞ Most people don’t need to breathe more—they need to breathe better.

❞ We’re hardwired for negativity. Nature made it more important to stay safe than to stay happy. The awesome part? You’re free to outsmart your biology if you’d like.

❞ Your breath is a conversation between body, chemistry, and mind. Learning the language makes all the difference.

❞ While hyperventilation breathwork can be useful for our mental health in short bursts… is it worth the long-term consequences, the dangers, for most normal people? Probably not.

Interview Talking Points

Below are a few suggested questions and discussion topics for interviews, articles, and podcasts. You’re welcome to use them as-is or as inspiration for your own coverage.

Long Form

What first got you interested in breathwork?

As a physical therapist, I often had this gut feeling that I could be doing more—something more central than just fixing movement or improving function. Don’t get me wrong, those things matter. But I wanted to help people move toward happiness, not just better posture.

Eventually, I realized the breath was the missing link. It’s the one system that connects mind, body, and emotion—and the one we can actually influence in real time. Once I saw that, I couldn’t not keep digging.

Why bring Qi Gong into the mix?

First off, I’m not a master—I’m still on the learning curve, and I like it that way. Qi Gong fascinates me because it’s where breath, movement, and mind meet in the most elegant way.

As a PT, I know how hard it is for people to “find peace” by sitting still in meditation. Qi Gong gives the body something to do—and the spirit something to feel. It’s accessible, powerful, and refreshingly non-dogmatic. Most people notice a shift after a single class. That’s addictive—in a good way.

You talk pretty candidly about hyperventilation-style practices like the Wim Hof Method or Holotropic Breathing. What’s your take?

That’s a hot topic, right? My honest answer: yes and no.

Yes—they can create powerful mental and emotional experiences. But no—they’re not for everyone, and they’re not a shortcut to wholeness. I’ve seen people get real benefits… and I’ve seen others get knocked off balance, sometimes in ways that take a long time to recover from.

The practice itself isn’t “wrong”—but the context often is. If your breathing foundation isn’t solid, it’s like doing sprints on a sprained ankle. You might get the endorphin hit, but you’re also deepening a dysfunction.

Controversially, I’ll add this: once you build great “breathing hygiene”—your baseline—there’s often no need to terrorize your nervous system to feel alive. Though, I’ll admit, I do like a good dose of chaos now and then. I just think not everyone needs an internal terrorist.

Your book title—Breathwork Exposed—sounds a bit rebellious. What are you “exposing”?

I’m exposing the myths, the overhype, and the missing science. Breathwork has exploded in popularity, but a lot of it has drifted into extremes—either mystical vagueness or push-hard-feel-something performance.

I wanted to bring it back to reality. To show that breathwork isn’t magic—it’s biology, it’s trainable, and it’s accessible. And when you get the fundamentals right, the so-called “magic” starts to happen naturally.

If there’s one thing you wish everyone knew about breathing, what would it be?

You can’t fake a calm breath.

You can slow it down, control it, count it—but until your body feels safe, your breath will always tell the truth. Learning to listen to that truth, rather than force it, is where the real transformation happens.

Short & Punchy

What first pulled you into breathwork?

I was a physical therapist fixing bodies—but I kept wondering, what about the person inside the body? The breath turned out to be the missing link between movement, mind, and mood. Once I saw that, there was no going back.

Why bring Qi Gong into the mix?

Because it works. It’s meditation that actually moves. Qi Gong lets people feel peace through motion—something most of us can grasp way faster than sitting still trying to “empty the mind.”

Do you have a beef with the Wim Hof or Holotropic styles?
Not a beef—a boundary. They can be powerful, but they can also wreck you if your breathing foundation isn’t solid. Build good breathing hygiene first, then go play with the extremes.
What’s being “exposed” in Breathwork Exposed?
The hype, mostly. I’m pulling the curtain back on bad science, over-dramatized claims, and half-truths. Breathwork isn’t magic—it’s biology—and once you understand that, the results feel pretty magical anyway.
What’s one truth about breathing most people miss?
You can’t fake a calm breath. You can control it all day, but until your body actually feels safe, the breath will always tell on you.
